Target Design Conciliation & Application Review

Target application and engineering staff review key requirements to improve machine performance.

Single axis solution

Performance requirements:

Precise speed control +/-0.5% speed variation, connectivity to PC via standard serial interface.

DC battery back up system

Technology considerations included step motors, AC induction and AC servo.

Product Technology Selected

Primary challenge to provide precise speed control of drum with ~ 4000 to 1 load to motor mismatch. The AC induction solution was eliminated due to DC input needs and speed regulation. The step motor system did not have enough power to control system. Target supplied Danaher’s S200 and AKM servo amplifier and drive solution to meet the task.

Design Implementation

Preliminary testing was done using a step motor system. The AKM motor selected was a mechanical drop in replacement reducing conversion time. The S200, offering the highest velocity loop bandwidth in the industry, simplified tuning the huge inertia mismatch. The standard Modbus RTU serial interface was ideally suited to connect with the existing PC architecture.

Overall Success

The design was completed meeting all the application requirements. Speed regulation and the control interface simplified the design completion. In addition the servo motor and amplifier selected is one of the highest efficiency systems in its’ class. This minimizes the power consumption extending the operating time of the system when running on batteries.
